The Casbah radio show revives Tawali
Tonight 8/25/12 on KSYM San Antonio 90.1 FM between 7 and 9 PM CST, The Casbah 15th Anniversary radio show gives the band Tawali back to the world. Tawali is Eric Bowles, Jack Sample, Travis Williams, Johnny “Crow” Luna, Beej Shuler, and John “MuscleMouth” Lugo. Rising from the ashes of the defunct Soul Turtle came Tawali, the Cherokee word for punk. Based in San Antonio, TX in 1994 and ’95, the group played 4 to 5 gigs a week in the area. They rooted themselves in the local coffee houses until outgrowing these venues. Zoey’s coffee house asked Tawali not to come back, when their last gig produced broken windows, burned furniture, holes in the wooden floor, 400 kids taking over the place and not much coffee sold. Everybody paid the cover. Jim Beal of the San Antonio Express News described Tawali’s sound as eclectic, a mixture of funk/ punk/ blues/ hip-hop/ reggae/ rock/ and acid-jazz. The lost Tawali tapes have been unearthed. The spell has been broken. There are rumors of a Tawali rebirth, as well as a “Best Of” album. Stay tuned to E-TIP Records, and listen to Tawali tonight on the 15th anniversary of The Casbah, on KSYM 90.1 in San Antonio, 7 to 9 PM CST.
In other E-TIP news, John “MuscleMouth” Lugo performed to a sold out Hollywood Bowl on 7/15/12 with Ziggy Marley’s band backing Bob Andy and Freddie McGregor, opening for Ziggy Marley himself as well as Toots and The Maytals.
E-TIP Records is taking over the globe, one mile at a time.
The Nightmare has begun.
